Where is our trust?

There is a verse in Psalms I have loved since I was a 13 year old navigating the social pressures of dances and volleyball try-outs. I may have passed those years of anxiety, but I’ve moved on to additional, very different pressures. Every time I come back to this verse I find myself hearing it’s words in a different way.

How do these words change when we examine our own hearts’ cries?

Some trust in health, and some in beauty;

Some trust in bank accounts and 401ks; 

Some trust in legislation and some in politicians;

Some trust in will power, and some in their hustle;

Some trust in Bible studies and going to church;

Some trust in nature and some in animals;

Some trust in Google, and some in degrees; 

Some trust in theologians, and some in bloggers;

Some trust in espressos, and some in ice cream; 

Some trust in order and some in feelings of control;

Some trust in families and some in their children. 

But we trust in the name of the Lord our God. 

Where is our trust? What idols are we holding? Which ones have the tendency to set us off if they are “out of sorts”? Which ones are we holding on to as the answer to all our problems, if we just get them right?

Many things on that list are great, wonderful, beautiful, and helpful things. Others may seem silly, yet I’ve see them all sneaking in and grabbing hold of my hopes and my desires. These things cannot bear up under the weight of our trust. They will fall short.

But friends, the name of our Lord? It will never be crushed. It will never falter. It will never fade away. Hold tight to that promise with me today. Let’s loosen our grip on whatever else we are placing our hope in, and let’s hold on to the one who will never pass away.

All the nations may walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever. Micah 4:5
